Mourinho makes fine start with Spurs, Liverpool and City win

first_imgLONDON (Reuters) – Jose Mourinho began life as Tottenham Hotspur manager with a 3-2 victory at West Ham United yesterday, while Premier League pacesetters Liverpool won to remain eight points clear and defending champions Manchester City also took three points. The use of VAR continued to be a major talking point, however, having a say in Liverpool’s 2-1 win at Crystal Palace and second-placed Leicester City’s 2-0 triumph at Brighton & Hove Albion. Manchester City fought back to beat Chelsea 2-1.Liverpool have 37 points from 13 games, with their unbeaten Premier League run now stretching to 30 games going back to last season, with Leicester on 29, City with 28 and Chelsea 26.Norwich City, Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers all won away but Southampton were denied victory by a 96th-minute Arsenal equaliser from Alexandre Lacazette in a 2-2 draw. That result will pile more pressure on manager Unai Emery, particularly after Mourinho’s winning start at rivals Spurs produced their first success on the road in 10 months. The 56-year-old Portuguese head coach’s new side should really have romped home after strikes by Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane, whose 175th goal for the north London club moved him up to third on their all-time scorers’ list.Mourinho chose to highlight the contribution of midfielder Dele Alli, who produced an outrageous piece of skill in the lead-up to Spurs’ second goal by somehow scooping the ball down the line to Son when it had appeared out of play. “(Alli’s) too good to not be one of the best players in the world and not playing with the national team (England),” said Mourinho, who hugged the midfielder warmly as he left the field. But Mourinho admitted he was disappointed with the way Tottenham leaked two late goals, a familiar failing from a side who have kept one clean sheet in the league all season.“I was really happy before we conceded the two goals, we were playing well, bringing to the game things we had tried in training,” said 56-year-old Mourinho. Spurs are ninth on 17 points with West Ham 16th on 13.LATE WINNERLiverpool grabbed another late winner through Roberto Firmino at Selhurst Park against a spirited Palace side who were controversially denied an opener from James Tomkins after VAR spotted a push on defender Dejan Lovren. Juergen Klopp’s team rode their luck to take the lead through Sadio Mane after the break, although Wilfried Zaha gave Palace hope of a point with a goal in the 82nd minute before Firmino intervened to make it 12 league wins out of 13.The win put pressure on City, beaten at Anfield before the international break, to win in their top four clash with Frank Lampard’s Chelsea side. The Londoners started brightly and grabbed a 22nd minute lead through N’Golo Kante, who beat Ederson after latching on to a superb through ball from Mateo Kovacic. But City struck back twice before the break with a fortunate deflected shot from Kevin De Bruyne and then a fine, solo strike from Riyad Mahrez. The result ended a six-match winning streak for the young Chelsea side, who continue to win admirers with their lively and progressive approach. “We went toe-to-toe,” said Lampard. “The amount of time we got in their final third we didn’t have that little bit of quality. Games like that can be lost in the boxes.”VAR, the season’s perennial talking point, also had a say at Brighton, where Leicester’s Jamie Vardy was ordered to retake his penalty as the Foxes secured a fifth straight league win after Ayoze Perez had opened the scoring for the visitors.Arsenal have dropped further away from the Champions league qualifying places after a poor result against Southampton, with boos ringing around the Emirates stadium despite Lacazette’s 96th-minute goal — his second equaliser of the game. “We’re kicking ourselves,” said Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse after they failed to hold on for the win. “On a positive note, it’s a building block for us and we have some winnable games coming up.”Everton’s Marco Silva is another manager feeling the heat following his side’s 2-0 home defeat by Norwich City, a result that moved the visitors off bottom spot. They are replaced by Watford, who lost 3-0 to Burnley after strikers Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes scored in the second half to secure their team’s first away win of the season. Wolves moved up to fifth as Joao Moutinho and Raul Jimenez earned Nuno Espirito Santo’s reinvigorated side a 2-1 win at 10-man Bournemouth, who had Simon Francis dismissed 37 minutes into his first league start since Boxing Day for a second booking.last_img read more

Rocks demolish Blitz in one-sided MSL derby

first_imgThe Paarl Rocks made an impressive early statement in the Mzansi Super League with a comprehensive and clinical 86-run win over the Cape Town Blitz in a picturesque Paarl on Sunday. On a somewhat sluggish surface, the home side were indebted to a calm Dwaine Pretorius (39 off 26) and a late flourish by Sibonelo Makhanya – who smashed 16 off 8 at the death – to reach a highly competitive 170/9.The two men prevented their side from thoroughly wasting a magnificent platform, having reached 107/2 in the 11th over. The skillful left-arm spin of George Linde, who took 3/23, was a sign of things to come as the Blitz hauled themselves back into contention. But the pace of Hardus Viljoen (2/9) immediately undermined the Blitz’s reply, who simply couldn’t repeat their batting heroics from the opening game at the Wanderers. As the Rocks became increasingly strokeless, Tabraiz Shamsi ran through the lower order to claim 3/16 as the hosts slumped to a depressing 84.Batsman of the gameProteas skipper Faf du Plessis looked a class above the rest in an attacking and entertaining 38 off just 20 deliveries, an innings punctuated by four sixes. It felt like a real waste when the experienced stroke-maker was run out, after chancing his arm on a second run to deep midwicket. His partnership with the evergreen 39-year-old Henry Davids (38 off 26), a local from nearby Pniel, was fun to watch.Bowler of the gameShamsi didn’t have to bowl to any top order batsmen, but he still utilised the platform laid by Viljoen and co superbly. There was guile and a hint of turn from a player with definite X-factor as he bamboozled his opponents.Turning pointBjorn Fortuin’s fine grab at backward point to dismiss Quinton de Kock was pivotal. The Blitz rely heavily on their captain to get things going with the bat and looked in control in hitting three fours in his 14.He probably could’ve left Viljoen’s iffy delivery wide of off, but it still required some great skill by Fortuin. For more sport your way, download The Citizen’s app for iOS and Android.last_img read more

Delph: “Pep helped me just as he has other City players”

first_img 16/06/2018 The Manchester City player admitted that everyone “has an idea” what starting eleven Gareth Southgate will choose for England’s World Cup debut, but he didn’t want to give away any clues. However with England having “so many good players” Delph was sure that anyone who wasn’t picked wouldn’t be upset at not being in the line up. Upd. at 18:40 “They’re a good team. They know how to move the ball, are talented and we’ve watched videos of their matches – and I’m sure we’ll watch more tomorrow. We know how they like to play and we have a game plan which we hope will work,” explained Delph at a press conference today. The Manchester City player, who appeared after a behind closed doors training session, explained that the whole squad watched the Portugal versus Spain match. “It was exciting, a great game. Obviously Ronaldo did what he always does, we all saw it. They are two huge teams and it was exciting.” Delph: “Pep me ha ayudado mucho como a otros jugadores en el City” RELATED STORIES The midfielder also spoke about Spain at this World Cup and how they are one of the favourites for the trophy. “They’re probably one of the favourites, but we didn’t expect anything less from Spain. They’ve got fantastic players, a fantastic team and that’s what makes the World Cup exciting to watch.” “In this squad there are so many good players, when you pick one, all of the team is behind him. We’re training, playing together, we’re positive and when you’re given the chance you hope you show what you’re capable of,” added Delph, who has largely played as a left back under Pep Guardiola. “Obviously all of the City players have been influenced by him, he’s helped us develop. And you can see from the changes we’ve made this season, we’re getting better.” center_img England start their World Cup campaign on Monday night against Tunisia. They’ll then face Panama on the 24th and Belgium on the 28th to round off Group G. CEST IN SPORT.ES “I think I’ve worked very hard. Obviously, Pep has helped me a lot just as he has other players at City. My work ethic is good and Pep has worked a lot with me. This season has been fundamental in my career, I’ve grown a lot,” Delph said after winning a domestic double under Guardiola last season. Fabian Delph, England’s central midfielder, has told the media ahead of England’s debut at the World Cup that Tunisia are “a good team” but England have “a game plan” to beat them on Monday. Despite Julen Lopetegui’s exit from the Spain hot seat following the news he had agreed a deal to take over at Real Madrid, Delph believes will Spain benefit from having “a system that they’ve been using for a long time” after speaking to City teammate David Silva. “I know Silva really well and I spoke with him this week and it appeared as if everything was okay. I think they’re a great team, they’ve made the right decision and I hope they get back to the level they were at before. Although yesterday they had to face Cristiano!” concluded Delph. Powered by Firework Darren Gough believes that the absence of Bhuwaneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah in the first test beginning in Birmingham on Wednesday won’t affect the Indian side as they have enough options in their pace attack.Advertisement “Bhuvneshwar is a big loss and he wasn’t at his best during the ODI series because he was carrying an injury. But India aren’t a side anymore that is dependent on one bowler. Earlier, they were dependent on Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath or Zaheer Khan, that is no longer the case. India are suited for all sorts of wickets, and they look prepared and geared up for this Test series. Today, you have to be on top of your game to beat India, whether you are playing at home or away because they possess everything in their bowling attack. Kumar gives you swing, Bumrah is a skidding seam bowler, Umesh Yadav can move the new ball as well and he has got pace, Mohammed Shami is strong and hits the deck hard, while Ishant Sharma has experience, aggression and he can bowl lots of overs.” Gough told PTI.Advertisement Gough has spoken about the various options Captain Virat Kohli has in both pace and spin departments and remarked that India’s well-rounded attack is suited for any pitch that is laid out in this ensuring series, despite missing out Bumrah for the series opener and Bhuwaneshwar for the three matches. Also Read :Advertisement Cricket: South Africa counter spin with spin to attain lead in the ODI SeriesCricket: Zaheer Khan suggests to raise the standards of the Yo-Yo test Advertisementlast_img read more
