George Osborne heads to Brussels to argue against £1.7bn EU bill

first_imgGeorge Osborne is today expected to argue that the UK will not accept an instalment deal to pay the £1.7bn bill Brussels has demanded in full over the course of 2015, after a spokesman for the Prime Minister said that this would be “unacceptable”.The chancellor has been sent to negotiate a reduction in the UK’s bill, calculated by statistical authority Eurostat, at a meeting of finance leaders in Brussels. It follows a week of discussions aimed at getting to the bottom of how the bill has been calculated, based on the UK’s gross national income.EU officials suggested earlier this week that leaders would allow the UK to spread the full bill over several months without incurring interest on the debt. However. a government spokesman said last night that the scale of the £1.7bn payment is unacceptable and no such deal will be agreed.Osborne’s meeting comes as the UK’s own commissioner in Europe, Lord Hill, urged Westminster’s politicians “to calm the situation down”, and to “look at a practical solution to the challenges that various member states face” following the large bills. US company results season – New York Report

first_img whatsapp Express KCS Show Comments ▼ US company results season – New York Report whatsapp WITH earnings season underway, Wall Street is putting macroeconomic policy and the US Federal Reserve on the back burner in favour of a focus on individual company results and forecasts for a pulse on the economy’s health.Several big banks, including JP Morgan Chase and Bank of America, are due to report first-quarter earnings this week, providing an expected bright spot in an otherwise gloomy quarter.Investors will also be watching firms such as Netflix, General Electric  and Schlumberger, to see if corporate America more broadly outperforms the negative forecasts analysts have set for it.Energy companies will likely be hit by a dramatic drop in oil prices since last June. In addition, a strong US dollar is expected to eat into the earnings of companies with international exposure as they convert their profits back into dollars. center_img Share Read This Next’The View’: Meghan McCain Calls VP Kamala Harris a ‘Moron’ for BorderThe WrapBill Maher Pokes Fun at Joe Manchin: He’s a ‘Democrat Except on Matters ofThe WrapRicky Schroder Calls Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl ‘Ignorant Punk’ forThe WrapRick Leventhal to Exit Fox News Just as His Wife Kelly Leaves ‘RealThe WrapNewsmax Rejected Matt Gaetz When Congressman ‘Reached Out’ for a JobThe WrapDoes ‘In the Heights’ Have a Post-Credits Scene? The WrapAzealia Banks Blasts Candace Owens’ Juneteenth Diss With Callback toThe WrapJason Whitlock, Former ESPN and Fox Sports Reporter, Resurfaces at BlazeThe WrapCNN’s Brian Stelter Draws Criticism for Asking Jen Psaki: ‘What Does theThe Wrap Sunday 12 April 2015 11:04 pm by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksYou May LikeMoneyPailShe Was A Star, Now She Works In ScottsdaleMoneyPailUnify Health LabsRandy Jackson: This 3 Minute Routine Transformed My HealthUnify Health LabsMaternity WeekA Letter From The Devil Written By A Possessed Nun In 1676 Has Been TranslatedMaternity WeekAll Things Auto | Search AdsBuick’s New Lineup Is Truly StunningAll Things Auto | Search Adszenherald.comMeghan Markle Changed This Major Detail On Archies Birth Certificatezenherald.comGameday NewsNBA Wife Turns Heads Wherever She GoesGameday NewsTaonga: The Island FarmThe Most Relaxing Farm Game of 2021. The Bank of England last night recommended extending the senior managers’ regime to all fixed income, currencies and commodities traders at banks, as well as their counterparts at interdealer brokerages and buy-side asset managers.Bank of England governor Mark Carney also wants to increase the maximum jail sentence for criminal market abuse from seven year to 10 years. And his Fair and Effective Markets Review (FEMR) proposes extending market behaviour rules to cover areas such as spot foreign exchange trading, interest rate derivatives.Carney last night spoke of an “ethical drift” in the City which contributed to the scandals of recent years.“Unethical behaviour went unchecked, proliferated and eventually became the norm,” he told an audience at the Mansion House.“Too many participants neither felt responsible for the system nor recognised the full impact of their actions.”With these announcements, he declared: “The age of irresponsibility is over.”Senior Bank of England bosses, including Carney, will become more personally accountable, with responsibilities publicly set out for different areas of Bank operations. There will be a major consultation in the autumn to which all interested parties are invited to contribute ideas for making financial markets fairer and more transparent, so they serve customers better. However, lawyers cautioned that the changes are less sweeping than Carney claims.“Despite what FEMR would like us to think, this is really business-as-usual,” said Rob Moulton from law firm Ashurst. “Criminalising what has already been earmarked as unacceptable market practice is not a game changer. It does however increase the pressure on the UK regulator to take its first scalp.” whatsapp Show Comments ▼ Mansion House speech: The age of irresponsibility is over, says Mark Carney center_img whatsapp by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksYou May LikeInvestment GuruRemember Cote De Pablo? Spotify make alt-Glasto line-up

first_img Show Comments ▼ Spotify make alt-Glasto line-up Tags: NULL whatsapp Express KCS whatsapp THERE was a lot of controversy around this year’s Glastonbury line-up – and that was even before Kanye West’s defiant Saturday night performance on the main stage. While some were happy to see folkish singer Florence and the Machine replace the Foo Fighters to headline on Friday, others had petitioned against Kanye being there at all. Yet all the dispute has been settled by music-streaming service Spotify, which came up with its own Glastonbury line-up based on the site’s most popular tracks. Both Florence and Kanye have been brought down a peg on the alternative line-up. According to the number of Spotify streams, the real headliners on Friday and Saturday night should have been singer-songwriters James Bay, who was streamed more than Florence, and George Ezra, who had more streams than Kanye. News / AEO scheme suggested for container shippers to comply with new weight rules

first_imgBy Gavin van Marle 26/06/2014 In response to the forthcoming mandatory verification of the weight of containers, the Global Shippers Forum (GSF) has suggested the creation of an accreditation scheme for known shippers, along the authorised economic operator model.Speaking at the final day of the TOC Container Supply Chain conference in London today, GSF secretary general Chris Welsh told delegates the organisation was working with a number of national governments on “how we develop an accreditation scheme for the calculation method”.Under the new Safety of Life at Sea (Solas) amendments adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) last year, shippers must have the declared weight of their container verified by either actual weighing, or demonstrating the calculated weight of the containers – the weight of the cargo plus the tare weight of the box itself.“We are trying to develop a traceable, audit-based system that would warrant the establishment of a national database of known shippers,” Mr Welsh said.“This would provide governments with a traceable source, an assurance that the system is audited and a method of dealing with people who get it wrong.“And there will be major benefits to other stakeholders in the supply chain which have visibility into the database, particularly for shipping lines, and I think it could potentially lead to real improvements in supply chain standards.“And it has commercial spin-offs, such as leading to fewer delays and more efficiency – it could help us move toward the digitisation of shipping documents and getting paper out of the system.”Mr Welsh added that the process of building a model accreditation scheme had begun and he hoped it would be completed within the next six months. However, it has its opponents. Paul Hamilton, assistant secretary at the dockers’ section of the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF), continues to press for the mandatory weighing of containers as the sole method of verification. He told delegates: “We want all containers to be weighed, as you cannot put a price on safety. The calculation method seems complicated and we have requested further clarification, and we will lobby national governments for independent spot checks to be performed.“If the calculation method fails, then mandatory weighing must become law,” he added.Others expressed doubt that the GSF scheme could become a reality internationally.“Let’s face it, most containers are loaded in China, so if there is a problem of misdeclared weight it begins there, and I just do not see how you can enforce such a scheme across all the hundreds of thousands of exporters there,” one forwarder told The Loadstar.last_img read more
