Calypsonian fined for possession of cocaine

first_img Share Chris “Ghetto Prince” MetorA 2013 calypso finalist, who was arrested on suspicion of possession of cocaine on Wednesday 5th June, has been charged.Chris “Ghetto Prince” Metor, 33, pleaded guilty to possession of 3.8 grams of cocaine and possession with intent to supply cocaine at a magistrate’s court in Roseau on Monday 10th June. The cocaine was found in twenty-six pieces of foil paper. The arrest was made at St Johnson’s avenue on 5th June. According to police prosecutor inspector Claude Weekes, Metor told the police ‘Officer I cannot work as a result of that I have no alternative than to get two grams of cocaine to juggle to make a change for me to eat”.“Officer it was my cocaine that was there underneath the tyre in the old building where you find it and my friend who I met in the old building drinking has nothing to do with that,” Metor told police. Metor who complained of stomach and chest pains was admitted to the Princes Margaret hospital before he was charged.He told Chief Magistrate Evelina Baptiste that he was frustrated by unemployment and apologized for his action. Magistrate Baptiste, who said she was concerned about high cocaine use in society, blamed Metor for being one who encourages vagrancy and told him that he should be ashamed of himself.“These are people who should be useful to the community. If you are not taking it then you are one of those jumbies, one of those devils who are spreading it to other people and who will cause them to become like those vagrants in the street,” she warned. She urged the young calypsonian to change his life as he is someone that people will look up to because of his career music. He was fined $7000 on the intent to supply charge which he must pay by 31st December, 2013 or in default serve 9 months imprisonment.He was also fined $3000.00 for possession of cocaine to be paid by 31st December, 2013 or in default of payment spend 7 months in prison.Ghetto Prince sang “Stockfarm Blues” made it to the final round but was unable to participate in the competition. He had emergency surgery on the same morning of the finals, Saturday, February 9th.
