first_img PENSACOLA, Fla. – Junior Jason Ream (Newton, Ala./Ridgecrest Christian School) of the West Florida men’s soccer team had his left-footed volley saved by the goalkeeper as time expired in double overtime, sending UWF and Florida Southern home with a 2-2 tie on Sunday.  The draw was West Florida’s first of the season, as the Argonauts finished the weekend with a 2-1-1 record for the season.Ream was sent in as a substitution four minutes into the second overtime period, and he had two chances for a game-winner in the last minute of play.  Ream fired a shot high with 51 seconds left, and he was in position in front of the net for a one-touch volley during the final countdown, but his shot from six yards out was right at Florida Southern (4-0-1) goalkeeper Johan Jonsson. The Argonauts received their offense from sophomore Trey Kramer (New Orleans, La./Jesuit HS) and freshman Jimmy Merritt (Jacksonville, Fla./St. Johns Country Day School).  Merritt scored his first career goal in the 44th minute, and Kramer scored the equalizer in the 83rd minute for his first of the year and second of his career.Florida Southern jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half, and the first came in the eighth minute.  Zach Hofstetter sent in a free kick from the right sideline, and Ashley Holmes was in position to head it past the keeper and into the back of the net.  The Moccasins then went ahead by two on a goal by Viktor Bakkioui on a rebound of a Brad Hunt shot at the 29:35 mark.Merritt was in position to score in the 44th minute off a booming shot by senior Matt Tanner (Gulf Shores, Ala./Gulf Shores HS).  Tanner’s shot bounced off the crossbar, and Merritt pounced on it and headed it past the keeper to put the Argos on the scoreboard.  The assist was the first of Tanner’s career. It was not until the 83rd minute that West Florida finally tied the score at two.  The Argos won a foul on the right side of the field, and junior Frank Cope (Mobile, Ala./UMS-Wright Preparatory School) took the free kick.  Instead of a chip into the box, Cope went to junior Marquel Waldron (Warwick, Bermuda/Saltus Grammar School) in the middle, and Waldron kept it going to Kramer, who was open for a one-touch shot inside the left post. The Argonauts controlled play during the overtime period, but they could not break through the Moccasins defense for the winner.  UWF attempted four shots in overtime, including three in the second overtime, but Ream’s last second shot was the team’s best chance to take home the win.UWF finished the afternoon with a shot advantage of 17-10, and the Argos also attempted 11 corner kicks to their opponents’ five.  Jonsson finished with three saves for Florida Southern, while UWF senior goalkeeper Elliott Purdom (Wilmslow, England/Viterbo) saved two.The Argonauts will head back on the road for two regional contests next weekend, first facing Tampa on Friday, September 17 and then visiting No. 22 Saint Leo on Sunday, September 19.  Fans can follow both games live at Print Friendly Version Argos Denied in Last Second, Tie Florida Southern 2-2 in Double OT Sharecenter_img Trey Kramer scored the equalizer in the second half in UWF’s 2-2 tie on Sunday (Photo by Ron Besser) last_img
