UWF fell to Valdosta State in the conference semifinals and UNA went on to win the conference championship. Sunday afternoon was the Argos first shot at revenge.“To be able to go on the road against a very tough team like North Alabama, and come back from down a goal, speaks volumes to the mental toughness of this unit,” said UWF coach Joe Bartlinski.UNA got on the board early when Nikki Brown headed the ball into the back of the net off of a corner kick by Jennifer Osmond just 5:50 into the game. UWF took the momentum back 30 minutes later when Chelsea Palmer (Plano, Texas/Tyler JC) kicked the ball high into the air and into the box. Bush jumped into the air to attempt a header over the outstretched arms of the Lions’ keeper. Neither made solid contact, and the ball bounced before Bush shot a low header on a second attempt into the net to tie things up 1-1 with 34:50 on the clock. The Argos came out of halftime aggressive and worked the ball into the Lions’ box at the 50:55 mark. Daniela Cruz (San Jose, Costa Rica/University of Costa Rica) crossed the ball past a diving keeper to find Bush in front of the net for the easy score.Later in the second half, UNA was awarded a penalty kick after aggressive play in the box. Two-time GSC Player of the Year and current conference-leading scorer Chloe Roberts set up against Story, the defending GSC Defender of the Week. Story got the upper hand on Roberts, diving to save the shot and keep the momentum in UWF’s favor.Bush took advantage of one more opportunity with 66:47 on the clock. She worked the ball through a crowd of defenders and into the box, got tripped up, but snuck the ball under a diving keeper before tapping it into the goal with an outstretched leg before falling to the ground.Cruz added one more of her own five minutes later. She too drove the ball through four defenders before shooting it into the top of the net from the middle of the top of the box.UWF ended the game with 11 shots to UNA’s 12. A pair of UNA keepers tallied three saves in the game, and UNA had five corners to UWF’s three.Strong defensive play by the Argos, led by Taylor Harbison (Neptune Beach, Fla./Fletcher HS), kept Roberts scoreless for the first time this season.“I feel we can still get better,” Bartlinski said. “So, that’s what we’ll get to work on in practice this week.”UWF will play Christian Brothers (3-3, 1-2) on Sept. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at home. For information on all UWF athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com. #ARGOS#                          Soccer Game Summary (Final)                          West Florida Women’s Soccer     #7 West Florida vs #21 North Alabama (Sep 16, 2012 at Florence, Ala.) West Florida (6-0, 2-0) vs. North Alabama (4-1, 1-1) Date: Sep 16, 2012  Attendance: 233 Weather: Goals by period       1  2  Tot ——————————- West Florida……..  1  3 –  4 North Alabama…….  1  0 –  1  SCORING SUMMARY:  1.   5:50 UNA Nikki Brown (1) (Jennifer Osmond) – Kick off header  2.  34:50 UWF Shelby Bush (4) (unassisted) – Headed twice in left corner  3.  50:55 UWF Shelby Bush (5) (Daniela Cruz) – in front off net off cross  4.  66:47 UWF Shelby Bush (6) (unassisted) – knocked in off deflection while laying on the ground  5.  71:09 UWF Daniela Cruz (1) (unassisted) – drove through defenders, then upper middle Shots: West Florida 11, North Alabama 12 Saves: West Florida 7 (Sarah Story 7), North Alabama 3 (Schyler Arnold 2; Lauren Middleton 1)Print Friendly Versionlast_img
