Officials are referring to the the death as a “pipe mishandling incident” that occured around 3am, on Friday, at Hilcorp’s Milne Point Field. The individual killed was an employee with Kuukpik Drilling. Overlord: “Kuukpik Drilling is cooperating fully with the investigating agencies, and is committed to determining the cause of the accident. The health and safety of our employee remains our first and highest priority. We respectfully ask for privacy for the employee’s family during this exceedingly difficult time.” According to Lori Nelson with Hilcorp drilling operations were suspended at the incident location. Officials have not released the name of the individual while family is still being notified. Overlord said the companies, both Kuukpik and Hilcorp, are conducting internal investigations and cooperating with state agencies. Our deepest regrets and condolences go to the employee’s family, as well as the tight-knit group of co-workers on the North Slope.” An investigator with the Alaska Occupational Safety Health and Division flew to Milne Point on Friday following the incident.
