History to unfold in Pom men’s softball

first_imgSoftball BY SIMON KESLEP History will unfold itself as reigning Port Moresby men’s A grade champions Brown Eagles and Defence run onto Bisini diamond one for the 2019 season Grand Final on Saturday. The New Guinea Islands Insurance Broker sponsored Eagles will be aiming for a back-to-back title while Defence on the other hand are making their first Grand Final appearance. It is also a match-up of talents, experience, discipline and athleticism that has seen both teams performing to their best this season thus far. Past Grand Final winners on the newly refurbished Bisini diamonds were United Brothers (2015/2016) PNG Power (2016/2017) and Eagles (2017/2018). Whether it turns out to be a catch up softball fixture, the Matupit Island boys and the lads in green outfit will ensure they put on a slugfest Grand final innings giving spectators and softball followers in the nation’s capital their monies worth. The last time the two teams met during season proper Defence pulled off a one run win (2-1) against the Eagles and it is now up to both teams to make amends. For the Julius Uvia-coach side (Eagles), they are known for backing up in fielding with batting and pitcher Kolish Pagal, back stopper Pedro Kulukul, infielders Consie Lumaris, Peter Bunbun, Bernard ToAlbert, Tyrone Paivu including outfielders skipper Martin ToAlbert, Graham Kinavai and Manu ToAlbert will again give Defence a good run for their money. Defence Coach Douglas Paak last week admitted his player’s structure of play was spot-on and he will again be banking on his senior players to take the lead. Their fielding will be guided by pitcher-catcher combination of Mosley Obed and Lepan Maradi with support from skipper Kepas Mormor at short stop, Jonos Paon on first base, Ainui Matlaun on second, Ben Olda on third and outfielders Chris Paak, Gabby Maloni and Roland Meli. On batting, expect the unexpected as upsets can be caused with sluggers smacking away big hits and even a homer or two. In fielding, less errors, quick decisive plays and infield executions compliments and fires up a good batting order. The B grade Grand Final between Anti Pest sponsored United Brothers and Lamana sponsored Yokomo will pitch off at 10am while the A grade final is at 1pm. Gate fees is K5 (Adults-18 & above) K2 (12-17 years old) K10 (vehicle & driver).last_img
