OPINION ON SABLE MINING SCANDAL

first_imgGLOBAL, the Liberian public interest group, empowered to change the social and economic conditions in Liberia for the greater good, today releases its opinion on the Sable Mining scandal in Liberia.GLOBAL is calling for the immediate resignation of Alex J. Tyler, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Grand Cape Mount County Senator Varney Sherman. The People of Liberia deserve to be represented by individuals who can offer their full attention to solving their problems, says Global. The group considers corruption in Liberia as synonymous with Ebola due to its crippling socioeconomic effect. Moreover, evidence shows poverty invites corruption while corruption tends to deepen the effects of poverty. Evidence also shows corruption discourages foreign direct investment and bilateral aid to developing countries. Therefore, Liberians must remain vigilant in standing up against corrupt public servants if we are to eradicate abject poverty in our nation, said GLOBAL.Liberia’s legal system is best known for cloning the functions of statutory organs established by law. The alleged bribery incident does not need a special presidential taskforce. Liberia has an Anti-Corruption Commission and a Justice Ministry that are empowered by legislation to investigate and prosecute corruption cases. However, we are compelled to say that the Johnson-Sirleaf’s administration is best known for establishing ineffective commissions of inquiry to investigate well-documented cases with no compelling history of successful prosecution, GLOBAL charged. Moreover, the composition of the Presidential Task Force creates worrying doubts of success judging it is led by an individual convicted of felony charges in the United States. Be as it may, GLOBAL is urging the government of Liberia to expand the Task Force by inviting civil society organizations and others to join the Task Force. An expanded task force will create more transparency and accountability, thus allowing the Liberian people to have confidence in the justice system.Criminal Court A subpoenaed four financial institutions to produce bank statements of United States dollar accounts belonging to several public officials. However, one of the recipients of Sable Mining’s corrupt largesse, who happens to be the son of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Director of the National Security Agency, Mr. Fumba Sirleaf, was never mentioned in the subpoena. GLOBAL is calling on the task force to look into this matter.Global is appealing to fellow Liberians to allow the justice system to carry out its legal functions. “We believe this case will lead to more investigations into corruption and economic sabotage by government officials. Additionally, we are demanding investigations of the General Auditing Commission, the National Oil Company of Liberia, the National Security Agency, and the John F Kennedy Medical Center. Finally, we challenge our citizens to remain vigilant and continue to follow this investigation without taking sides. GLOBAL is asking Liberians to stop accepting money or “cold water” from shady characters as payment for staging fraudulent demonstrations in their behalf. This behavior is unethical and corrupt.GLOBAL stands against corruption and supports the rule of law in Liberia. We are of the conviction that nobody should be above the Rule of Law since selective justice has the tendency to start chaos which is replete in Liberia’s history.Again, GLOBAL is calling for the immediate resignation of Speaker Tyler and Senator Sherman and an investigation into Fumba Sirleaf’s participation in the alleged bribery case.“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” – Elie WieselShare this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

New Netscape = New Coke?

first_imgrichard macmanus 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Related Posts Tags:#New Media#web center_img Over the past couple ofdays I’ve gotten 170 comments (and still going!) on a post I wrote last week entitled Netscape CommunityBacklash. I’ve actually gotten more comments than theofficial Netscape story on this topic. The general gist of the feedback is thatexisting Netscape users dislike the new digg-like Netscape and want their old portal back. A few commenters compared the new version of Netscape to the New Coke debacle in the 1980’s, when Coca-Cola introduced a new formula which turned into a public relations disaster. As well as the expressions of hatred for the new community news-style Netscape, it’snoticeable how many people still associate Netscape’s homepage with the Netscape browser. In many ways it’s common sense to associate the two together, because there is still a browser named ‘Netscape’. But it does showthat Netscape management has a branding problem, to add to the considerable teethingproblems they’re having transitioning a reluctant 12 million users to the digg stylehomepage.Withoutrepeating what I wrote in my previous post, nevertheless I think it’s worthwhile re-printing a coupleof emails I received today – which seem to sum up the feelings of these Netscape users. Here’s one from “another older, non-techie”:“It has been about 8 years that I’ve been on Netscape, at work and at home. Everyonehere in the office is using MSN except me, because I’m more familiar with Netscape. Ithas always presented what I wanted & needed in a format that worked well for me.I wouldn’t’ve minded the format change so much if it hadn’t made it impossible to getto my e-mail. “Go to MyNetscape…” No dice. I thought it might’ve been a problem with myhome computer, so I tried going in thru the computer here at work. Snake-eyes.After having been on for about a week, it now seems to be willing to let me into myNetscape e-mail account more easily. Too late: my husband, sons & I have sent out toeveryone on our e-mail lists that we are now on Optonline.net (as much as it galls me tocast more of my lot in with the Dolans!) And, yes, like #26 said, it’s kinda worrisomethat ANYBODY can post ANY story without knowing how much research they did first. And,yes, the news format DOES kinda feel like a reality show.As soon as I get a couple of extra minutes today at lunchtime, I’ll need to change myhomepage. Sorry, but I actually access the internet for work-related info more often thanfor pleasure, so I need for it to be mundane and predictable. I actually kinda liked thatI got The Big Stories right there as I was on my way to do research.”What’s Netscape doing about this? They’re currently pointing its portal-loving usersto AOL. On the Netscape homepage is this message: “Looking for a classic portal style? Wesuggest the new AOL.COM.” However AOL.com doesn’t wash with James Avery, who emailed me this message to Netscapeboss Jason Calacanis:“You [meaning Jason Calacanis] said elsewhere, “the old Netscape and current AOL arebasically the same (just a different logo up top), so we’re sending the folks who like a‘top down’ or ‘classic’ portal to AOL.”The two portals were NOT basically the same. AOL.com was ALWAYS an option to thecurrent Netscape.com user base, though 12 million users declined to use AOL.com in favorof Netscape.com which appealed to them. These users are now up for grabs by all of yourcompetitors, and I hardly see how AOL is in a position to have not treaded lightly here. Some of the existing users have voiced their concerns, but I suspect many others willjust quietly reprogram their start pages to other portals. Seems like AOL is saying F***YOU to all of the 12 million people who had enjoyed a portal that disappeared overnight.Nice attitude. I think you owe its users and investors in the company a clear andconvincing explanation.”It certainly looks like the people have spoken. And they’re not happy. Will the newNetscape go the way of the New Coke? Or will Calacanis and crew get over this hurdle andconvince a good portion of those 12 million users to stick around? Judging by the comments on my previous post, many of them seem to be already migrating to MSN and Yahoo. Forget the Rocketboom soap opera, this ismuch more interesting!
