UWF Baseball Picked To Finished Third, Three Named Preseason All-GSC

first_img“I think we’re in as good of shape as we’ve been in any of our years getting ready for the season. We’re overall pretty healthy,” Jeffcoat said of the team’s preseason preparations. “It looks like the pieces are falling together where guys are going to play, and we’re really going to hammer in and identify those roles.” 2018 GSC champion Mississippi College topped the preseason conference poll with 137 total points and nine first-place votes. Second-ranked Delta State finished with 129 points and three first place votes. The Argos came in at third with 122 total points and one first place vote. The team was picked to finish fourth last season. Montevallo, Valdosta State and Lee rounded out the conference’s preseason top six. West Georgia, West Alabama, Alabama Huntsville and Union completed the top 10. Auburn Montgomery, Shorter and Christian Brothers finished 11-13. “Preseason polls are predictions, and we have to prove we can be a top team in our league,” said UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat. He may often be pitching to a fellow Division I transfer in Mike Farnell, a catcher and designated hitter from Murray State and East Mississippi Community College. Farnell appeared in 50 games last season for the Racers, making 48 starts. He tied for the team lead with 10 home runs and finished fourth on the team with a .319 average. Mills-Derouen figures in prominently to this year’s pitching staff after a First Team All-GSC season in 2018. The lefty provided one of the highlights of last season with a seven-inning no-hitter vs. Union March 3. He finished with a 4-1 record and a 3.56 ERA over 55.2 innings in his first year at UWF. Mills-Derouen appeared in 14 games and made 10 starts, striking out 69 batters in 55.2 innings and allowing an opponent batting average of just .203. Jones headlines a group of Argo returners expected to lead the squad this season. He is one of a dozen seniors on this year’s team. A 2018 All-GSC First Team selection, Jones was also a 2018 ABCA Second Team All-South Region, D2CCA Second Team All-South Region and NCBWA Second Team All-South Region selection after finishing the season with a .351 average, eight home runs, 34 RBIs and 46 runs scored.center_img The University of West Florida baseball team’s 2019 schedule features a 48-game regular season slate, including 30 Gulf South Conference games. West Florida opens the season Feb. 1 at home vs. 2018 South Region champion Florida Southern at 6:00 p.m. The game will be the first in a three-game, three-day series. Conference play begins at home Feb. 16 vs. Christian Brothers. For the latest information on UWF baseball, follow the team on Twitter @UWF_Baseball. GSC PRESEASON POLLPENSACOLA, Fla. – Matthew Jones, Matthew Estrada, and Dylan Mills-Derouen were selected to the preseason All-GSC Team, and UWF baseball was picked to finish third in a preseason poll of conference coaches released Wednesday. Andrew Vaccacio and Mike Farnell were named the conference’s Top Newcomers list. Vaccacio will be a key part of the starting rotation for the Argos in 2019. A transfer from St. Johns River State and Appalachian State, the senior lefty is a proven commodity at the college level. He finished last season as Appalachian’s number two weekend starter. He made 14 starts and allowed three earned runs or less in eight of them, finishing the year with 80 strikeouts. Estrada joins the preseason All-GSC team after being selected as the conference’s Freshman of the Year in 2018. The Pensacola Catholic alum made 43 starts and played in 47 games as a freshman, becoming the first UWF freshman to earn the GSC Freshman of the Year award since 2014. He batted .347 with nine doubles and a home run, posting a .453 OBP as a part of a Second Team All-GSC campaign. #ARGOS#Print Friendly Versionlast_img read more
